CHAPTER SEVEN

THE next day the whole team managed to gather in the staffroom for lunch. Kirsty was beginning to realise what a rare event this was. The sheer numbers of patients meant that there was always someone in Theatre or on the wards, but today everyone had made it for lunch at the same time and there was almost a party atmosphere.

‘I gather you’ve been enticed away by Jenny and Greg for an overnight stay at Pelindaba Game Park,’ Sarah said. ‘Lucky you. Jamie and I took Calum there once, but he kept squealing with excitement every time we got close to the animals and frightened them away.’ She laughed. ‘We didn’t make ourselves too popular with the rest of the group. I think we’ll have to wait until he’s a bit older before we go again.’

‘Or perhaps leave him with Sibongele,’ Jamie said pointedly. ‘It would be nice to get away, just the two of us.’

‘He’s a bit young yet, Jamie. Not that I don’t trust Sibo, but it would be unfair to burden him when he has so much on his plate already,’ Sarah protested, and from the looks on their faces Kirsty suspected that this was a discussion that they’d had before. It seemed as if Sarah couldn’t bear to be parted from her child, even for a short time.

‘I could look after him some time if you’d like,’ Kirsty offered.

Sarah looked at her speculatively. ‘No offence, Kirsty, but you don’t strike me as the kind of woman who has had much experience looking after young children.’

‘Well, that’s where you’d be wrong,’ Greg interjected quietly. Kirsty hadn’t even been aware that he’d been listening. ‘I’ve seen her in action with a child, a very frightened and bewildered boy, and she worked miracles with him. I think if you ever left Calum in Kirsty’s hands, they would be safe hands indeed.’

Everyone looked at Greg, surprised at his support of Kirsty.

But no one could have been more surprised than Kirsty herself.

‘Do you come from a large family, then?’ Sarah asked.

Kirsty felt uncomfortably aware that everyone had stopped talking and were now regarding her with interest.

‘I’m an only child,’ Kirsty said. At least, she was now. ‘But I worked at a children’s hospice during the university holidays and my last rotation before coming here was in paediatrics. The children seemed to take to me—perhaps it was because I didn’t talk down to them.’ Kirsty couldn’t help slide a pointed glance in Greg’s direction. But he seemed oblivious to her hidden meaning.

‘Oh, well, perhaps we will take you up on your offer soon. Once Calum has got used to you,’ Sarah conceded, earning Kirsty a warm smile from Jamie.

‘And we’d all chip in, wouldn’t we, Greg?’ Jenny added. ‘You know I would have offered, Sarah, but as much as I love Calum I’m simply not the maternal type. Never wanted children, and it’s probably just as well I never had them. The kids here are more than enough for me.’

‘What about you, Kirsty? Do you want children?’ Jenny asked

‘Yes.
